What is Aquaponics?

Web definition

Aquaponics is the symbiotic cultivation of plants and aquatic animals in a recirculating environment..

Simple Definition

In it’s simplest form Aquaponics is a self sustaining eco system where you can grow plants and fish by using each other.

Let me explain.

Aquaponics typically consist of a grow bed where your plants grow, as well as a fish tank where your fish live. Your plants need food(nutrients) and water. Your fish need food, air(aerated water), and clean water. With Aquaponics you use each(plants and fish) to help each other survive and flourish.

How do they work together?

Fish poop and pee which creates ammonia, which in excess is toxic and will kill your fish.  Plants need nutrients and water to grow(duh!).   Keeping things simple, the fish waste is used to give nutrients to the plants and the plants clean the water for the fish.  The cycle goes on and on while the plants and fish maintain the health of the other.
